Sumba Series

Created as a commission for House of Sunday in Bali, the Sunday Series is grounded in the island’s material landscape and quiet, everyday rhythms. Working closely with locally sourced pigments, I produced handmade paints using secang wood, gambier, and betel nut, materials that carry layered histories within Balinese and broader Indonesian traditions. Across these contexts, such materials are tied to practices of ceremony, healing, and daily life, where colour holds both physical and symbolic presence, embedded in cycles of offering, protection, and renewal.

Moving through the island and working in direct response to its pace and atmosphere, the works were built through a slow, intuitive process. The palette emerges from the materials themselves, with warm oranges, earth reds, muted pinks, and deep organic browns that echo soil, bark, and weathered surfaces, while subtly aligning with the visual language of House of Sunday. The series reflects the variability and sensitivity of handmade paints, where each mark holds a trace of process, inviting a slower way of looking and a more intuitive connection to material, place, and time..
