Sundays Are Better

  • 2026
  • 60cm w x 75cm h
  • Secang wood, gambier, betel nut, plant binder, mordant on raw canvas.

Created as a commission for House of Sunday in Bali, the Sunday Series is grounded in the island’s material landscape and quiet, everyday rhythms. Working closely with locally sourced pigments, I produced handmade paints using secang wood, gambier, and betel nut, materials that carry layered histories within Balinese and broader Indonesian traditions. Across these contexts, such materials are tied to practices of ceremony, healing, and daily life, where colour holds both physical and symbolic presence, embedded in cycles of offering, protection, and renewal.

Moving through the island and working in direct response to its pace and atmosphere, the works were built through a slow, intuitive process. The palette emerges from the materials themselves, with warm oranges, earth reds and deep organic browns that echo soil, bark, and weathered surfaces, while subtly aligning with the visual language of House of Sunday. The series reflects the variability and sensitivity of handmade paints, where each mark holds a trace of process, inviting a slower way of looking and a more intuitive connection to material, place, and time.

Artwork Information

Each piece is created using natural materials, including plant dyes and earth-derived pigments. Works are made on raw cotton canvas using intuitive, process-led techniques such as soaking, staining, and pouring. These materials and methods result in subtle variations in tone and texture, giving each painting its own unique presence. All pieces are signed on the reverse and come with a certificate of authenticity.

Framing

All works are shipped unframed unless otherwise stated. This ensures safer and more cost-effective international delivery and allows you to choose framing that suits your space and style. However, if you would prefer the piece to arrive framed, this can be arranged on request. Please get in touch to discuss options and receive a custom quote.
